El Camino Primitivo

Un sendero exigente marcado por las montañas

The Primitive Way is considered the first pilgrimage route of the Way of Saint James, its origin dates back to the pilgrimage of the King Alfonso II of Asturias called “the Chaste” who walked this path when he was informed about the finding of the grave of Saint James in the year 813 AD.

It’s probably one of the most demanding routes of the Camino de Santiago but in spite of its difficulty, it has some of the most charming stages with the beauty of its landscapes and the splendour of some of the towns it passes by. The Primitive Way starts from the Cathedral of the city of Oviedo and continues through part of the western half of Asturias passing through the inland by Grado, Salas, Tineo, Borres, Pola de Allande, La Mesa and Grandes de Salime.

This path goes deep into Galicia through A Fonsagrada, Cádavo Baleira, Castroverde and Lugo. This last one is one of the major cities in Galicia that possesses architectural gems worthy to admire like the Wall that surrounds the old quarter that can be walked around. The Camino Primitivo joins the French Way in Melide and continues its itinerary along this path until Santiago de Compostela.

The team of Galician Roots provides you with its extensive experience acquired over the years in order to plan the Primitive Way and enjoy all the diversity that Galicia and Asturias have to offer: history, breathtaking sceneries, the hospitality of its people and its taste for a good cuisine.
